Every good floor starts below the screed. Floor preparation is the unglamorous groundwork — cleaning and priming the substrate, fitting damp-proof membranes, laying insulation and edge foam — that decides whether the finished pour is flat, dry and crack-free, or a problem waiting to surface.

It is also where corners get cut by others. We treat prep as part of the job, not an afterthought, because a screed is only ever as good as the base it sits on.

What it covers

Depending on your floor, prep can include clearing and cleaning the substrate, repairing or levelling the base, installing a damp-proof membrane to keep ground moisture out, laying insulation for thermal and acoustic performance, fitting perimeter edge foam to allow movement, and priming bonded surfaces so the screed keys properly.

Why it matters

Damp rising through an unprotected slab, a contaminated surface that will not bond, insulation that is not continuous — these are the root causes of floors that fail. Getting the prep right is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a floor that has to last for decades.

Common questions

Do I need a damp-proof membrane?

On most ground-bearing floors, yes — without one, moisture from the ground can rise into the screed and floor covering and cause real problems later. We assess your floor and specify the right membrane.

Can you prepare an old floor for new screed?

Usually, yes. Depending on its condition we clean, repair, level and prime the existing base, or build up over it — and we tell you honestly what is needed rather than screeding over a problem.
